I moved to LA about a year ago, and I had the most incredible dance teacher up in Santa Cruz, my last home. I danced very consistently for over 2.5 years, and now haven't really found anything comparable to those classes. I'm on a never ending search for samba classes, samba reggae classes, or afro-brazillian dance classes. can anyone help me find something??? I just want to dance

My cavaquinho just arrived today. I don't play cavaquinho but I really want to learn. Can anybody suggest where to start? Are there any books on chords for cavaquinho? I have a good pagode collection but not being a string player, it would be quite impossible for me to transcribe from recordings.
Truth be told, I'm a percussionist so please keep your suggestions simple! :-)

This is a Brazilian Style drumming group that has played together for more than 5 years and has decided to take the magic that happens every week and introduce it to the general public. Batucada is a verb meaning drumming and is a Brazilian term for drum circle which is usually "Samba or Samba Reggae". We however do some other rhythms like Condombe' which is Uruguayan and Guaguanco which is Cuban, but it all comes back to Africa when you talk about drumming. We do also blend these rhythms with other instruments like electric guitar which gives the drumming a more song like structure and becomes what I can only describe as a "Funky Santana" Feel. We are also participating in the Dance Parade (We'll be providing the beat to move your feet) and will hopefully attract some more drummers to join us when we hit the streets. ReBoot is a newish Vegetarian restaurant which is related to Two Boots and has great vibe. They have lots of vegan and live things on the menu as well as offering the amazing pizza which does have some meat.

[Cross-posted to Burning Samba tribe]

I'm summarizing a debate that has gone on a long time here, so bear with me.

I play in what's maybe best described as a samba fusion group in Toronto. We have a bateria's worth of equipment -- repenique, caixas, surdos, tamborims, bells (some agogo, some improvised; tonal plastic pieces screwed onto cowbells), shakers (also homemade) -- and we regularly play community events and shows around town, but not necessarily "Brazilian" parties, more like parties, lefty events, artsy parades, Reclaim The Streets, that kind of thing, plus other assorterd gigs.

I am pretty much the only Portuguese speaker in the group at this point. We are fun group of mostly youngs people and students, but our knowledge of samba (as a group) is largely second-hand. We play a version of samba strongly based on samba-school style tradition and Olodum (samba-reggae) much the same. But the majority of our music is pretty much not samba by the book -- we do Dancehall (it rocks, trust me), Rai, and a bunch of other stuff we have made up, improvised or arranged based on more traditoinal forms over the years.

Our name is Samba Elegua. Our founding director and bandleader, who at first played and learned in a very traditional samba group, Escola de Samba Toronto, came up with it and he led us up to a few months ago when he moved away for career reasons. The new bandleader has objected to the use of the term samba for years and we are currenty working on ideas for a new name. The issue is that the currenty leader and some others (I am on the fence) think we are misrepresenting ourselves by using the samba label. The original director, who was the only one to keep things going for four years and did everything from booking gigs to fronting money for instruments (and transported them!), named us. He contends that we are samba in spirit if not in our musical approach because of the joy and freedom our music brings its players and audience. Elegua, the other part of our name, is a Cuban Orisha, a g-d of trickery, crossroads and new beginnings -- also known as Eshu in the Brazilian Orixa pantheon. There was a poll of members about this and some wanted to change, some wanted to put it off for the summer, some were sick of discussing it, some thought it a valid discussion to pursue. There is also the point that "other samba groups will be snotty to us no matter what we're called" and we could always call ourselves "The Ethnically Inspired White Person's Orchestra."

In the words of our founding director:

"I would say that this attempt to categorize, when applied to samba is as out of place as applying corporate management theory to the kallahari bush people. Samba is unlike any form of music that surrounds us in this culture because it is an artefact of a whole other kind of mental universe. The people who say we are not samba, brazillian or not, are looking at us through a lens that is fixed at a given depth of field, a given time and place, a given experience, and this by no means does justice to the spirit of the musical form itself.

... what are our responsibilities here? how ought we to go about being respectful while maintaining integrity? It is not ours to judge them as i would argue it is not theirs to judge us but if we all exercised all of our rights and freedoms all the time, we would all live in constant strife. So do we desist or persist? We are indeed being respectful but i agree, this may not be recognized by those in the brazilian community and out of respect, despite the fact that we are correct, should we pander to this type of cultural conservatism?

If we were all portuguese speaking brazilians who played in a band like this, as messy and as unprofessional as we may be yet in brazil... there would be no question. We would be samba. But the reality is that we are not, and we need to respect what we are and who we draw our inspiration from.

Enter the second part of our name en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eshu (lets hear it for the wik one more time). Samba comes from the african slave diaspora and the group of people who happened to have been decimated in the process were the yoruba. The yoruba have a pantheon of gods... one of them being olodum (protector, hunter) and hence groupo um cultura olodum (the name of the group whos sambafied olodum devotional rhythm we play). Another of these gods is elegua and this name was not chosen at random. This is no accident. Putting Samba and Elegua together was the best way i could see to describe the band. I saw us as the synthesis of the two concepts; samba and elegua, and no one much objected so we went with it.

in summation:

Side issues [seemingly related to the name change issue but in fact secondary and in my mind, not compelling reasons to change the name]
- our adherence to the musical form of 'samba' (whatever that may be)
- our relationship with other groups,
- our integrity and not misappropriating other cultures
- our use of the word 'elegua' as it is the name of a god in another religion and therefore religiously significant to some people
- our "brand equity" (didnt know what else to call it, sorry), in other words, the amount of buzz in the world about us, people knowing us by the name, our cards, our site, our history.

Core issue [the only issue compelling enough to support a process as arduous as changing our name]
== Given that our name inspires contempt among some of those in the culture we are guests in, regardless of the fact that we can proove such contempt is unreasonable, is this enough to compell us to change our name. == "

The group is undergoing a vote soon, and I have suggested Bateria Elegua, so that we can avoid the samba misnomer but keep the Elegua, which everyone likes. I also wonder if many will vote to keep Samba Elegua, and that is a definite possibility.

What do you think? Does it make such a difference? Who cares? If we do our best to interpret samba rhythms, playing samba drums, and people already know us by name, is it so different? Lots of groups playing samba music do fusions and funky interpretations and arrangements. Can they call themselves samba but not us?

Our site features MP3s to enrich your response, if you wish: sambaelegua.com

Your words won't affect the fate of our little group, but they will help me consider things. So thanks in advance.

Cachaça Gabriela is my name. Explaining: cachaça is the same of spirit, schnaps, eau de vie. That's a brazilian name for the spirit made from the sugar cane juice. Typical from Brazil.

But, I'm better than the cachaças I know you already know: I'm organic and artisan made.
That means that we follow the principles to being totally integrated with the environment. Plants are grown without any kind of chemical products giving the sugar cane full organic status. And the way I am produced is really similar to an art: we have to have patience and wait for my right time to drink: at least one year I rest at brazilian's wood barrels: jequitibá-rosa, amburana, bálsamo, amendoim.
I'm tight on cash but have quite a few items for barter: 2 Armoires (one's a beautiful Indonesian style), I've also got two really FUN purple velvet couches (org. paid $5,000 for these but am looking to sell all of my stuff to make this trip happen). oh...I've got a
ProPlus II treadmill (org. paid $2,700 for this, it's big and great for runners in the winter season). I can give you all the specs on these items if you're interested.
I really need this ticket asap because it's getting difficult to book these flights due to the holiday season.

Hi Everyone, we arrived in Recife, Pernambuco on Monday, and we saved the best part of Carnaval for last. Thanks to everyone for the great feedback.
The last couple days in Salvador were wonderful...Friday evening in Pelourinho we ran into a Bloco that was playing wonderful Maracatu (afro-brazilian rhythm from Pernambuco state) this bloco was very special because they had made the 10+hour car journey all the way from Olinda with their alfaias (large wooden drums) plus they had a large brass section that was playing wonderful melodies to the pulsing rhythms. While Beto and I were dancing hard, we got a big thumbs up from someone that looked familiar, and sure enough it was a friend of ours from Santa Cruz, CA playing caixa with the bloco--small world. Later that evening we ran into an amazing samba de roda (circle) that was playing traditional samba de roda with pandeiros and atabaques (hand drums) at nose bleed tempo. Someone in the circle saw us dancing, and pulled us into the center of the circle to samba! It was quite the workout because they were playing, singing, and dancing so hard and fast! Sunday evening we enjoyed filhas de gandhi afoxe (all women) super fun with an incredible singer, then later the filhos de gandhi afoxe (all men) 7000 members strong -no lie- playing unbelievable afoxe rhythm and dancing and singing of course.
Monday we arrived in Recife and were greeted by Beto's niece Aline which was very sweet. She drove us to Beto's friend's apartment here in Boa Viagem with ocean view and pool where we are staying. The first night was mind blowing Maracatu in downtown Recife. There were helicopters flying around an enormous crowd. The event was Noites dos tambores silenciosos which is an annual event where all the Maracatu blocos come out and play, after midnight they cut the lights for a moment of silence in respect for the slaves that were tortured. It takes place in the old part of downtown around the church where the slaves were traded and tortured. The interesting thing was that when they went to cut the lights, there was no switch, but rather these men with very little in terms of safety gear went up ladders that were leaning against nothing but wires, and basically unplugged the wires with bare hands. keep in mind the voltage in this part of Brazil is 220 volts, and the ladders were leaning against wires, not the poles, and on the street were large puddles of beer etc..pretty insane that it all went without a hitch! They went back up the ladders and the lights came back on after 15 minutes of so of silence. After all that the blocos started right back up to the pulsing Maracatu which they play very fast with some new intrumentation including chocalhas and timbals.
Tuesday we headed by bus to Olinda which is in my mind the best Carnaval city anywhere. It was very special because not only are there huge trees throughout the city for shade, and ocean views everywhere, this is the city Beto grew up in, so we went from house to house visiting friends and family, hopping in the outdoor showers or pools to cool off, and dancing. Cooling off in the pool listening to live amplified pagode with a caiprinha in one hand and a beer in the other hand in the shade of a manguera (mango tree) heaven! When you show up at a friend's home, they immediately make cocktails, and/or offer food, and are incredibly warm, dancing catching up etc. When it is time to keep it moving, they offer go cups. We met countless friends and had a wonderful time dancing on the streets checking out the frevo blocos with brass, and the Maracatu was beyond description. 10 piece maracatu blocos playing more traditional rhythms in a circle of alfaias, incredibly tight breaks, in the center were the xequere (large beaded ghourds) players playing and dancing with pure enjoyment. I was driven to tears once again! Yesterday (wednesday) carnaval continued in Olinda, so we went back and had a wondeful meal at Beto's sisters house, cooled off in the pool again, and went to party at Jonah's. I had my camera yesterday, and got a couple shots of the festa brasiliera.

This is from a good friend who is in our local Samba Hood Rio. I thought you all might like a little vicarious Carnaval.

Hi friends and family, We are here in Salvador which I have come to find out is the major destination in Brazil for Carnaval. It is a constant party, and people are still arriving from everywhere you can imagine, mostly from around Brazil, but also tons of Brits, Euros, Israelis, some Americans etc etc --super fun party, all free on the streets which are decorated beyond festive including massive figures of Bahians --very Black women in flowing white dresses. The really cool thing about Carnaval that I noticed is the commitment to traditional Afro-Brazilian rhythms--also the fact that it is really all ages. There are literally babies partying with their families, 80 year old women partying in tradional Bahian outfits at 3AM, --fully awake. It is non-stop parades with massive trucks that carry the sound systems and the musicians and dancers perform on top of the trucks -trio electrico, accompanying the music is the entire percussion section who are on the street with their drums marching and dancing, everyone smiling big and singing. It is for sure a huge crowd, but there are so many vendors with little carts and coolers, there is no wait for freezing cold beers, and no wait for the porta potties believe it or not....also we were able to get a spot on a nice park bench to sit and relax for a bit between blocos.
Yesterday we took a break from Carnaval, and went to the beach, it was a gorgeous sunny day. The beach was fully lined with coco palms and the surf was awesome for body surfing. There are kiosks setup where you can buy ice cold coconut water, and everyone sits at cafe tables on the sand with big barracas (umbrellas) for shade. The waitress comes around with menus so you can order food and beer or whatever you want right there on the sand.
The food in Bahia is amazing. Everything is made with palm oil, or coconut milk, or both, and is quite spicy with oregano, and pimenta. The fish is awesome, very tender especially cooked in the coconut milk. There is a Bahian tradional food that is popular with the vendors, very yummy called Acaraje which is a bean puree deep fried in the dende (palm oil) and served as a sandwhich with ocra, fish sauce, shrimp and pimenta--so good! The funny thing is that the McDonalds that opened here in 2001 actually tried to serve "MacAje" -their version of the Acaraje, and it was not very well received. In fact they were forced to cancel it because there was a huge protest from the entire Bahian population!
Two nights ago in the Pelourinho neighborhood there was an Afro-Brazilian bloco parading that was pretty rocking. When we got close, we realized that it was all Japanese people playing and dancing. Their leader was dressed up like Carlinhos Brown! So great to see, and so daring...the local crowd was unsure what to think, but everyone was dancing and having fun, but the facial expressions from the locals were pretty funny. Later we ran into a local Afro bloco that had full on line dancing behind the parade which was moving fast. We joined in the festivities, and learned some cool new moves-- the guy leading the dancing was super friendly --total legal--totally cool!
Today we are resting up because tonight is a big night--Olodum parades at 2AM and Ile Aye at 4AM! all right here in the Pelo.

I would like to invite other stilter's to join us. There are usually 5 - 7
stilters and it would be fun to have more! I am also inviting drummers and
dancers to come out too...........

Mara Reggae is made up of a samba percussion core, samba dancers, and then
us the stilters! There is a contribution of $35.00 (i think) to stilt in
the parade.

The first rehearsal is this Sunday, March 20 from 4-5:30 at City Dance
Studio. At this time Rhonda, the organizer, will go over the theme for our
group, and other logistics.

The rehearsals continue on Sundays until the parade on May 29th. It is not
mandatory that you attend all rehearsals. Usually the first set of
rehearsals are for people who are interested in learning the dancer's
choreography. Those rehearsals are held at the City Dance Studio on March
27, April 3, 10 and 17 from 4-5:30 pm.

On April 24th, the outdoor rehearsals start at Golden Gate Park, (these I
usually go to just for the fun of getting up) - The outdoor rehearsals are
from 12:30-2pm on April 24, May 1, May 8 and May 15.

The parade is on May 29th!!!!!!!!!!

Information about Mara Reggae and the location of the dance studio can be
found below.

If you are interested in joining us, would like more information or have any
questions, please feel free to e-mail me.

The warm summer days at Kosmos Camp are filled with music and dance workshops. Dancers learn and perform on finished dance floors, with wall mirrors in the main lodge. Musicians enjoy instruction and practice opportunities in our open-air venues. Both dancers and musicians study with world-renowned professional teachers in a wide variety of styles from different cultures.

And all campers enjoy the luxuries of Saratoga Springs Resort, nestled just over 2 hours north of both San Francisco and Sacramento in 260 private acres of forest. Miles of hiking trails with breathtaking views of nearby Clearlake and access to natural mineral springs, surround a pair of lodges with both indoor sleeping accommodations and clean camp grounds, complete with a spacious pool and large jacuzzi. All meals are provided by our professional chef and feature a gourmet menu with an eclectic array of world cuisines and a full bar serving reasonably priced mixed drinks, beer, and wine after dinner. Evenings feature concerts and dance performances by students and staff in the immaculate Heart Lodge, and open-floor dancing with late-night jamming afterwards.

Ultimately, Kosmos is both a school of music and dance, as well as an unforgettable celebration among friends. It is a special getaway where people bond their passions and talents. We hope you join us and help create a unique community that we all can cherish in the years to come.

Before heading out to the parade on Sunday, I checked out some of the live coverage on KRON channel 4...

Typical newscaster stuff, but with one parade organizer for a little more effect. Problem: I couldn't understand why they weren't showing much dancing. No, but then they were...but only of children ...or fully dressed adults. Curious.

Every time they'd show a group with men or women in more ...well, sexy outfits, they'd keep the camera at a serious distance! Kind of depressing for me, who really enjoys the more exotic outfits with feathers and such.

Contrary to what they showed on TV, the actual parade was much different. I just couldn't believe the coverage was so prudish.

The 'Sons and Daughters of Orpheus' were just wonderful live! As was Foga na Ropa (sp?)

So how long did it take you to "get it". I can't coordinate my feet to save my life. All this heel-ball, swerve, switch feet thing is killing me! Whine. Whine. Whine. Moan. I'm just disappointed that I still can't "samba". I can do the little hip circles and bigger movements- but the heart of the dance, the actual "Samba" part...nope...still alludes me. Though, as I said, I'm a complete newbie and even worse- I'm coming from a Middle East dance background. I wanna shimmy Egyptian style, but dammit, heel-ball, swerve, ball-heel, swerve, heel-ball, swerve...
